Department of Medical Biology

Our department was established on 30rd September 1998, as Mersin University Faculty of Medicine Department of Medical Biology and Genetics, with the appointment of Assist.Prof.Etem AKBAŞ. Assist.Prof.Nurcan ARAS ATEŞ was appointed on 23rd September 1999, Prof.Dr.Ali MATUR on 12th November 1999,  and M. Emin ERDAL was appointed on 22nd February 2000. Assist.Prof. İ.Ömer BARLAS on 15th September 2005, Assist.Prof. Mustafa Ertan AY and Assist.Prof. Özlem İZCİ AY on 4th October 2006 were appointed. The Master degree Program was opened in 1999 and the Doctorate Program in 2002. Our department is still; 6 faculty members, 2 research assistants, 1 biologist (Phd) and 1 technician in Mersin University Çiftlikköy Campus, Faculty of Medicine, Department of Basic Medical Sciences.

Mission:

Our department mission; is to bring together and integrate molecular genetics and clinical genetics research services. In line with this mission; In our department, we aim to develop new diagnosis and treatment methods on the genetic disorders by determining molecular pathogenesis of the genes that regulate the intracellular molecular pathways, and other molecular structures that regulate the functions of these genes, and chromosomes. Many basic and applied studies including molecular genetic changes in the etiology of cancer types and single gene diseases, are carried out in our department.

Vision:

Our department vision; To train students who can reflect the concept of molecular medicine to their professional practice and basic cellular and molecular genetic knowledge in all departments we teach (Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry and Postgraduate Programs)

Technology Opportunities

Medical Biology Department routine, research, and student laboratories have progressed rapidly since its inception. Today, Medical Biology Department Laboratories have the advanced equipment necessary for all kinds of research and examination, especially routine patient services and thesis researches in the field of Medical Biology and Genetics. When needed; the equipments and technical facilities in Mersin University Advanced Technology, Education, Research and Application Center are also used.

Research Areas:

Mutation / genetic polymorphism analysis, gene expression studies, detection of irregularities in epigenetic mechanisms (miRNA analysis, methylation analysis, etc.) in inherited genetic diseases (single gene and multi-factorial genetic diseases) and acquired genetic diseases (cancer, etc.), Determination of the effects of environmental factors (radiation, radiofrequency waves, carcinogens, etc.) on diseases, cytogenetic analysis at the chromosomal level are the main research areas of our department.

According to the data of the year 2020 in the Web of Science database, there are approximately 200 SCI and SCI-E research publications addressed to our department. At the same time, there are papers and awards made in many international and national congresses.

Physical Facilities:

In our department; There are study offices for faculty members, research assistants and graduate students, a multi-purpose seminar room, 4 laboratories that provide research and routine laboratory services (Prenatal Genetic Diagnosis and Cell Culture Laboratory, Postnatal Genetic Diagnosis Laboratory, Cancer Cytogenetics Diagnostic Laboratory, Molecular Genetic Diagnosis Laboratory), and a student laboratory. In these laboratories, in addition to genetic analysis of samples from Mersin University Hospital and regional hospitals, many research projects are carried out at the level of cytogenetic and molecular genetics.

Post-Graduate Education Opportunities

Master’s Degree Program

The Department of Medical Biology has aimed to educate staff who can work in the field of health sciences and have gained basic laboratory skills with the Master’s program affiliated with the MEU Institute of Health Sciences. The department started to admit its first student in 2000. Students starting their graduate education, gain knowledge in the field of Medical Biology with theoretical lessons, practical trainings, discussions, oral presentations and article presentations and discussions and they graduate after completing a thesis study. As of 2020, there are 44 students who have graduated from our master's program with a master's degree.

Doctorate Degree Program

The Department of Medical Biology aimed to educate instructors for Higher Education Institutions by gaining knowledge, experience and laboratory skills in the field of Medical Biology and Genetics, which can work in the field of Health Sciences with a PhD program affiliated to the MEU Institute of Health Sciences. Students who have successfully completed the "Doctoral Proficiency Exam", which is applied at the end of their theoretical and practical course, discussion, seminar and article presentation training, reach the level that they can carry out a thesis study in the field of Medical Biology. Students who successfully complete their thesis study are awarded with doctoral degree (PhD) and graduate. As of 2020, there are 17 students who have graduated from our doctorate program with a Ph.D degree.
