Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology

Pharmaceutical Microbiology, studies the properties of microorganisms that cause infections in humans, the diseases caused by microorganisms and microbiological methods for the diagnosis of these diseases. In addition, the production of antimicrobial agents and microbial products, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals microbiological quality control procedures, methods of sterilization-disinfection and general hygiene issues such as interest-enters the Pharmaceutical Microbiology. Our department is an interdisciplinary field of science in the field of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and aims to educate individuals such as pharmacists, basic scientists and researchers assimilated the basic concepts and applications in all areas of the profession. In addition, our department also aims to current research by following the developments closely in the field of Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Medical Microbiology serving public health and transfer the knowledge to the world of science, industry and the society in national and international platform, most effectively.

Departmental Facilities

There are 2 laboratories (40m2 each) in our department. In these laboratories, there are available technical equipments and working conditions for performing classic microbiological culture studies, advanced molecular microbiological diagnosis and molecular epidemiological studies. In research laboratory, antimicrobial activity studies, nucleic acid amplification-based diagnostic and further typing methods such as PCR, PCR-RFLP, rt-PCR, DNA sequencing as well as immunochemical assay methods such as Westernblotting, Dot blotting and ELISA for the diagnosis and characterization of bacteria, fungi, viruses and parasites are applied successfully. In addition, our academic staffs are the project partners within a project established an infrastructure, advanced molecular diagnostic laboratory of the early diagnosis of cancer and miRNA-based cancer diagnostic studies conducted in Mersin University Research Center for Advanced Technology Education (MEITAM). Our department offers the opportunity to research and education on nanotechnology based high capacity Real-Time PCR system estabilished in this molecular diagnosis laboratory to our students.
